What Is Cyber Security? Definition, Cyber Attacks & Types

Have you ever felt suspicious while entering personal credentials into an unknown website? Well, this is the time when you need to be careful from the cyberpunk! How do you need to be secure from malwares and muggers that lie on the open internet? Here comes cyber security. Let’s see what is cyber security and how it works.

What Is Cyber Security?

It is a method or a procedure to prevent or stop cyberattacks before or after the happening. Cyber attacks are the ones you know by hacking, fraud, cheating, money treachery, etc. Internet is open for all and it includes hackers also.

Cyber security is made from two words collectively “cyber” and “security”. Everything present online on the internet, all information, data, applications, computer networks, cloud technology, etc come under the term “cyber”.

And to prevent them from any attacks from the third party is called cybersecurity. Security involves system security, network security, information security, and application-based security.

Why Cyber Security Is Required?

Let’s look at an example. Suppose you recently bought an item online from any random online market. The next day you receive an e-mail from the same company that you had got a bonus amount.

And it is also mentioned that you have to verify your account details to claim the amount. Well, the amount was quite big and you do not want to miss that offer. And a less aware person believes that mail and gives those important credentials of his bank account to that person who sent the mail.

And guess what happens next? A few hours later all the money from his/her account went missing. Yes, you guessed right!

Nowadays every single work runs directly or somewhere indirectly on the internet only. Every online transaction, every personal credential, every database are present in the air! And a hacker need not be present physically anywhere to get his preying eyes.

You don’t know the intentions of anybody near you drinking coffee and operating his laptop. They can steal anything present on the open internet and you might not even know at the moment! That is why cybersecurity is necessary.

What Is Cyber Crime?

Any third-party organization, intruder, the hacker, does the same job – cybercrime. To manipulate and threatening anyone by stealing his/her important credentials from the internet and bargain them in return for money is a cybercrime.

We call these peoples as unethical hackers. The cyber crime field includes stocking, blackmailing, the credit card used by an anonymous person, fraud, copyright, etc.

This is a very common case nowadays as many innocent and unaware people were cheated by cyber attacks. Every nation has its own rules and guidelines about cyber security. Strict laws are also formed in the same field.

To ensure everyone’s details that are held by any database must be a secured one. And there are different laws for different cyber attacks.

What Are The Different Types Of Cyber-Attacks?

There are many different types of cyberattacks. Following are some examples. We will discuss all of them in the upcoming articles.

  1. Viruses.
  2. Adware and Other Malwares
  3. Trojan horse
  4. Ransomware
  5. Phishing and sphere phishing attacks
  6. Man-in-the-middle-attack
  7. Denial of service (DOS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack
  8. Password attack
  9. SQL injection attack
  10. ATM fraud
  11. Sharing copyright files or information
  12. Drive-by attack
  13. Spam attack
  14. Botnet attack
  15. Social engineering attack
  16. Cross-site scripting attack
  17. Key logger attack
  18. Inside attack and data breaches
  19. Cryptojacking attacks
  20. Crypto mining malware attacks

How To Prevent Cyberattacks Or How To Increase Cyber Security?

1. Use default Firewall

A firewall can filter incoming and outgoing traffic from your device and prevents unnecessary files to be download. Even a windows firewall does its job. It will block downloading unnecessary or accidentally clicked software. It also prevents auto-install software which is harmful to your device.

2. Use Antivirus

A decent antivirus program will help in preventing malware to download into your device from the internet. This is really helpful when you are using your internet very frequently.

3. Use VPNs

Take a habit to use VPN more often, especially in public areas and public Wi-Fi. That will be the first line of defense against any phishing attacks.

4. Use Strong Passwords

Nowadays, the minimum length of the password that one should keep for a strong password is 14 characters. As we can see, only a 10 digit long password is also not safe. By using advanced tools and algorithms anyone can obtain your 10 digit password. As a result, it is also a good habit to use different passwords at different places.

There is a trick you can follow to remember different passwords. You must remember a pattern and according to that pattern, you can change 1 or 2 characters. This is how your password remains mostly similar but still different enough that can annoy a hacker!

Where There Is Need Of Cyber Security For Government?

Along with the common people, the government also faces the issues of Cyber attacks. All the data are securely stored in the databases of the government. Confidential file leaks from that databases would lead to mass destruction. Hence Cyber Security is needed everywhere. As technology is becoming more advanced, hackers are also evolving simultaneously. And there is a greater demand in the field of cyber security in the upcoming years. Therefore there is a great job opportunity in the field of cyber security.
